Le sigle choisi pour représenter l'étendue et la spécificité de notre discipline fait référence à un article paru en 1961 :
The ecology of medical care.
N Engl J Med 1961;265:885-892. White KL, Williams TF, Greenberg BG.
La même étude a été refaite quarante ans après, confirmant ses résultats :

Les conclusions de White et al (1961) : "In a population of 1000 adults, in an average month :
- 750 will experience an episode of illness
- 250 of these will consult a physician
- 9 will be hospitalized
- 5 will be referred to another physician
- 1 will be referred to a university medical center
The latter sees biaised samples of 0,0013 of the "sick" adults and 0,004 of the patients in the community, from which students of the health professions must get an unrealistic concept of medicine's task in both Western and developing countries."
